Guest Nights
In January 2010, a total of 4,439,000 guest nights were spent in short-term commercial accommodation in New Zealand, an increase of 188,000 nights (4.4 percent) from January 2009. This is the highest number of guest nights ever recorded for a month, since the survey began in July 1996.
Both the North Island (up 105,000 or 4.3 percent) and South Island (up 83,000 or 4.5 percent) recorded an increase in guest nights in January 2010.
International and Domestic
In January 2010, guest nights comprised 61.2 percent domestic guests (2.72 million guest nights) and 38.8 percent international guests (1.72 million guest nights). Compared with January 2009, domestic guests nights increased by 2.3 percent (61,000) and international guest nights increased by 7.9 percent (126,000).
Accommodation Types
All four accommodation types recorded an increase in guest nights in January 2010 when compared with January 2009.
Hotels had the largest increase in guest nights (up 80,000 or 8.0 percent), followed by holiday parks (up 51,000 or 3.3 percent). Motels increased by 30,000 guest nights or 2.5 percent and backpackers increased by 26,000 guest nights or 5.2 percent.
Occupancy
The overall occupancy rate of accommodation establishments in January 2010 was 49.5 percent, up 1.2 percentage points when compared with 48.3 percent in January 2009.
Hotels had the largest increase in occupancy (up 2.9 points to 57.4 percent), followed by backpackers (up 1.6 points to 56.3 percent). Motels had the only decrease in occupancy (down 0.4 points to 57.5 percent).
RTOs
In January 2010, Queenstown recorded the largest increase in guest nights (up 33,000 or 14.0 percent) from January 2009. This was followed by Nelson-Tasman (up 27,000 or 10.5 percent), Coromandel (up 25,000 or 16.6 percent), Canterbury (up 25,000 or 5.4 percent) and Wellington (up 20,000 or 10.2 percent).
Whakatane-Kawerau recorded the largest decrease (down 19,000 or 25.3 percent), followed by Central Otago (down 15,000 or 16.3 percent), Dunedin (down 4,000 or 4.0 percent), Taranaki (down 4,000 or 4.2 percent), and Southland (down 4,000 or 6.6 percent).

For the year ended January 2010, there was a total of 32,201,000 guest nights, down by 131,000 (0.4 percent) on the previous year.
