Guest Nights

In June 2010, a total of 1,731,000 guest nights were spent in short-term commercial accommodation in New Zealand, an increase of 113,000 nights (7.0 percent) from June 2009.


Both the North Island (up 78,000 or 7.8 percent) and South Island (up 35,000 or 5.6 percent) recorded an increase in guest nights in June 2010.

 

International and Domestic

In June 2010, guest nights comprised 64.9 percent domestic guests (1.12 million guest nights) and 35.1 percent international guests (0.61 million guest nights). Compared with June 2009, domestic guests nights increased by 8.9 percent (92,000) and international guest nights increased by 3.6 percent (21,000).

 

Accommodation Types

All four accommodation types recorded an increase in guest nights in June 2010 when compared with June 2009.


Hotels had the largest increase in guest nights (up 58,000 or 9.2 percent), followed by motels (up 28,000 or 5.0 percent), holiday parks (up 23,000 or 13.9 percent), and backpackers (up 3,000 or 1.3 percent).

Occupancy

The overall occupancy rate of accommodation establishments in June 2010 was 26.9 percent, up 1.5 percentage points when compared with 25.4 percent in June 2009.


Hotels had the largest increase in occupancy (up 2.9 points to 44.3 percent), followed by motels (up 2.0 points to 36.7), holiday parks (up 0.7 points to 6.5 percent), and backpackers (up 0.4 points to 31.6 percent).

 

RTOs

In June 2010, Auckland recorded the largest increase in guest nights (up 22,000 or 6.5 percent) from June 2009. This was followed by Bay of Plenty (up 19,000 or 43.5 percent), Queenstown (up 19,000 or 14.9 percent), Rotorua (up 15,000 or 17.3 percent) and Canterbury (up 10,000 or 5.0 percent).

 

Ruapehu recorded the largest decrease (down 4,000 or 15.7 percent), followed by West Coast (down 3,000 or 6.5 percent), Nelson-Tasman (down 3,000 or 7.3 percent), Wanganui (down 2,000 or 18.5 percent), and Timaru (down 2,000 or 14.1 percent).

For the year ended June 2010, there was a total of 32,337,000 guest nights, up by 618,000 (1.95 percent) on the previous year.
