Expenditure
International visitors spent a total of $6.187 billion in New Zealand for the year ended December 2009 (excluding international airfares). This is an increase of 4.0% ($240 million) on the previous year.
Markets
The Australian market recorded the largest increase, up by $185 million or 11.6%, followed by China (up $72 million or 27.0%) and Germany (up $54 million or 22.5%).
In contrast, the expenditure by the United Kingdom (down $100 million or 11.0%), Japan (down $40 million or 9.6%), USA (down $20 million or 3.2%) and South Korea (down $7 million or 3.3%) markets were lower than the previous December year.
Average Spend
The average spend per visitor was $2,783, up 3.8% on the previous year.
