Economic Impact of the America's Cup

There have been five studies undertaken on the economic impact of the America's Cup Regatta for New Zealand, covering the 2007, 2003 and 1999 events.

This report is an update of an assessment carried out in 2003 by Market Economics Ltd which identified the economic impacts and benefits likely to accrue to New Zealand's domestic economy from public investment in a New Zealand America's Cup challenge.

The report aims to identify the economic impacts and consequent benefits likely to accrue to New Zealand’s domestic economy from public investment of $33.75 million to a Team New Zealand challenge for the America’s Cup.

Economic Impact of the 2003 America's Cup

This study shows that the build-up to and defence of the America's Cup produced some $529 million of economic value added, of which $450 million was added to the Auckland economy.

Build-Up to the 2003 America's Cup

Economic activity associated with the build-up to the 2003 America's Cup brought an estimated $62m of additional expenditure to the New Zealand economy, with the major share ($60m) spent in Auckland.

Economic Impact of the 1999 America's Cup

The 1999 America's Cup generated $640 million of value added in the New Zealand economy, of which $473 million was in the Auckland region.
