Yield Research

The first tourism strategy, New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010, highlighted the need to examine drivers of financial and economic sustainability in the tourism industry.
To address these recommendations the research programme called Enhancing the Economic and Financial Yield of Tourism was developed (otherwise known as the Yield Research Programme).

The Yield Research Programme involved three years of pioneering research to investigate financial and economic sustainability in tourism by taking an objective and holistic view of the sector.
This research focussed on Financial Yields for firms, economic yield across government agencies, yields generated by different tourist types and provided insights into social and environmental considerations.
The Yield Research Programme was undertaken by Lincoln University in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Industry Association, with support from Tourism New Zealand.
Special thanks to the Tourism Industry Association’s funding partners for this research: Air New Zealand, Budget Rent a Car, Jasons Travel Media, Regional Tourism Organisations New Zealand (RTONZ), SKYCITY Entertainment Group, Inbound Tour Operators Council (ITOC) and New Zealand Hotel Council (NZHC).
The Summary Report of the Yield Research Programme provides a high level summary of research methods and key findings - and is the recommended first text.
A Financial Yield Calculator was developed from this research. This calculator enables tourism businesses to calculate and benchmark their own Financial Yields against those of other businesses in their particular sub-sector of tourism. The Financial Yield Calculator is available on the Tourism Industry Association website.
