Research with Foundation for Research, Science & Technology

Last updated: August 2009

The Tourism Strategy Group is jointly investing funds with the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST) in research for the long-term benefit of tourism.

The key research priorities being funded are;

Future Maker or Future Taker: Scenarios for Tourism

Victoria University will lead research that will construct long-term scenarios to help better understand possible futures for New Zealand tourism.  The research will look at global trends and influences such as market shifts, international demographics and environmental changes. Visit the Future Maker website for project updates.

Preparing the Tourism Sector for Climate Change

Lincoln University will investigate how the physical effects of climate change will impact tourism in New Zealand regions, and recommend actions the sector can take to adapt to and potentially take advantage of these effects.  Visit the Climate Change and Tourism website for project updates.

Tourism and Aviation: Critical Linkages

The University of Otago will examine the factors influencing the provision of international and domestic air services in New Zealand. Airlinks are a critical pipeline and the New Zealand tourism industry and the New Zealand economy relies on them. The goal is to provide a greater understanding of this increasingly complex and dynamic sector.  Visit the Centre for Air Transport Research website for project updates.

      These projects will commence in the second half of 2009 and will run for three years.
