Tourism Research Scholarships

The Tourism Research Scholarships are for Masters students doing a research-based Thesis on an area of current importance to the tourism industry. 

The Scholarships are designed to build research capacity in tourism, encourage research applicable to the industry, increase the profile of tourism research, and create stronger links between researchers, industry and the public sector.

 

2010 Scholarship Recipients

  • Jane Godfrey – Journeying to the other side of the world – motivations and expectations of backpackers travelling to New Zealand (Master of Tourism, University of Otago).
  • Hamish Jenkin – The impact of social networking mediums, such as weblogs, on the decision-making process of tourists; An analysis of the promotion of Stray Travel and Spaceships New Zealand (Master of Management (Tourism), Univesity of Waikato).
  • Richard Singleton – Waste minimisation practices in New Zealand tourism – what are the barriers to separating organic waste in large hotels (Master of Environmental Studies, Victoria University).
  • Paul Singh – Absorbing knowledge in RTOs – how does absorptive capacity (knowledge sensing, searching and seizing) create flexibility, innovation, performance and competitive advantage in Regional Tourism Organisations (Master of Tourism Management, Victoria University).
  • Paul Spurdle – The environmental impacts of temporary events on outstanding natural features and landscapes (Master of Planning, University of Otago).

Past Scholarship Reports

Scholarship holders also prepare industry reports on completion of their Thesis. These reports are shorter than a thesis and are designed for industry audiences.
