Installing the Tourism Database Reader

Last updated: December 2009

You can access tourism data from the Ministry of Tourism databases once you have the free database reader software installed on your computer.

The software is a free, trusted programme (Citrix ICA web client) that takes around 1 minute to download on a high speed network or around 5 minutes on a dial-up 56Kb connection.  You only need to do this once and you will be able to view, graph and download source data.

Instructions:

  1. Download the Reader [external links]: Windows (download the the .msi package), Mac, Unix/Other Operating Systems.
  2. Save the programme to your computer (in a location you know how to find again)
  3. Install the programme (open the file and agree to the license conditions)
  4. Restart your Internet Browser.

If you do not wish to install the software, you will still be able to obtain data from reports and pivot tables, however you will not be able to change the presentation and formatting of the data.  If you would like to know more about the Citrix web client, visit the Citrix website.

Accessing the Databases

I'm having trouble downloading the database reader software - our system (firewall) won't allow it.

Some businesses don't allow executable (.exe) files to be downloaded via the internet, for reasons of security.  You will need to check with your IT support about whether you would be permitted to have the Citrix client installed.  It is a widely-used and trusted application, so it shouldn't be a problem.

If you would like to receive a copy of the programme via e-mail, send an e-mail to webmaster@tourism.govt.nz

I'm having trouble accessing the source databases - our system won't start up the software.
Your firewall needs to be set-up to allow you to browse the internet (initiate a TCP session) on specific Ports:

(i)                  Port 443 (SSL Secure Socket Layer)

(ii)                 Port 1494

(iii)                Ports greater than 1023

Most business firewalls can allow this configuration.  Check with your IT support technicians about whether yours do.  Your IT support technicians will need to know the following information:

The Citrix website is first contacted by the Web browser using the standard TCP Port 80.  If the user has Internet browsing then they have TCP Port 80 communications open.

Once the Citrix client is downloaded and running on the user’s computer whenever they start a Harmoni Data Viewer session, cube or report the following happens:

A remote user connects to the Citrix Secure Gateway Proxy server on port 443 and requests access to the Ministry of Tourism Data Viewer Application.

When the connection is established, the Citrix Secure Gateway Proxy decrypts data from the client before sending the data to the server, and encrypts data from the server before forwarding it to the client.

Where firewalls are conservatively set-up, users may not be able to create sessions using dynamically allocated ports. In this case a fixed port for that user will have to be negotiated. Their firewall will need to allow that port to be available for their users and the Harmoni Citrix site given special configuration.

If you require further assistance with configuring firewalls to allow Citrix sessions, e-mail Lancom Technologies - support@lancom.co.nz.
