Regional Visitor Monitor
Last updated:
May 2008
Survey Purpose
The purpose of the Regional Visitor Monitor is to provide information about international and domestic visitor motivations and expectations; travel planning and patterns of visitor activity; visitor satisfaction; and visitor expenditure – all at a regional level.
Survey Type
The RVM is a sample survey of approximately 7,200 international and domestic travellers aged 15 years and older per year.
Sampling
Using a standardized survey methodology, the RVM gathers information from visitors at a variety of data collection sites within Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Canterbury, Dunedin, and Queenstown.
The RVM uses a combination of non-random and random sampling: non-random sampling in the selection of survey sites employed, and random sampling in the selection of respondents at those survey sites.
Within each participating region, 300 respondents participate in this research each quarter of the year, aggregating to a total of 1,200 per annum per region, or 7,200 per annum on a national basis. Quotas are set to ensure the sample comprises an equal number of males and females, and an equal number of domestic and international visitors.
This self completion e-survey is completed on laptops at the supervised data collection sites.
Field Work
The process of data collection for the RVM takes place continuously throughout the year. The RVM interviews are conducted via an e-survey while respondents are on site in the region of interview. Information is collected about regional visitation for visitors who have spent at least one night in the region of interview.
Weighting
The sample is weighted to reflect the proportions as measured by the International Visitors Survey and the Domestic Travel Survey.
Survey Responsibility
The RVM is a joint venture between the Ministry of Tourism, Tourism New Zealand, Tourism Auckland, Tourism Rotorua, Positively Wellington Tourism, Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism, Tourism Dunedin, and Destination Queenstown. While this survey is coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism, the survey responsibility is collective.
The Ministry disseminates aggregated survey results only. The Regional Tourism Organisations disseminate regional-level results.
Survey History
The RVM has been conducted in New Zealand since 2005. It was developed as a joint venture between the parties above. Angus & Associates are responsible for running the RVM.
