Regional Visitor Monitor to YE December 2007 available

Last updated: April 2008

The Ministry of Tourism advises that the latest national benchmark Regional Visitor Monitor (RVM) is now available for download from its website. The RVM provides ongoing measures covering expectations, satisfaction, motivations, trip planning and booking methods of international and domestic visitors to New Zealand’s main tourism destinations.

Key findings include:

  • Accommodation in RVM regions is increasingly being booked online, with nearly half of all respondents preferring this booking method in the year to December 2007 (45%).
  • The expectations of visitors are increasing. Since the beginning of the survey in 2006, expectations of international visitors have increased in a number of areas such as beautiful scenery (up 5% to 66%), safety (up 4% to 65%) and friendliness of people (up 3% to 72%). The same trend is evident among domestic travellers.
  • Satisfaction levels are stable showing that on average travellers in New Zealand RVM regions continue to be pleased with their travel experiences with a score of 8.0 out of 10. However, the proportion of visitors that describe themselves as highly satisfied has fallen by 4% since the survey began, to 70% in the 2007 period.

The eighth edition of the national benchmark report includes special analyses on business travellers. The RVM is a partnership between the Ministry of Tourism, Tourism New Zealand and the Regional Tourism Organisations for Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Canterbury, Queenstown and Dunedin.
