Departures

  • In the month of June 2010 New Zealand residents undertook 198,840 short-term overseas trips, up by 22,520 or 12.8% compared to June 2009.

Destinations

  • There were more trips to Australia (up 8,370 or 11.3%), the United States (up 2,990 or 31.1%), the United Kingdom (up 2,590 or 21.3%), China (up 1,760 or 40.7%) and New Caledonia (up 890 or 155.9%).
  • In contrast, there were fewer trips to Thailand (down 640 or 19.9%), Malaysia (down 350 or 18.2%), South Korea (down 240 or 18.2%), Singapore (down 150 or 10.2%) and Hong Kong (down 100 or 8.1%).

Purpose

  • There were more New Zealanders on holiday (up 13,550 or 18.6%), visiting friends and relatives (up 4,730 or 7.8%) and on business (up 60 or 0.2%) in June 2010 compared to June 2009.

Duration

  • The average length of trips in June 2010 was 20.8 days, 0.4 day shorter than in June 2009.

Annual Departures

  • There were 1.968 million trips undertaken in the year ended June 2010, up by 48,390 or 2.5% on the previous year.
