Departures
- In the month of January 2010, New Zealand residents undertook 106,800 short-term overseas trips, up by 1,670 or 1.6% compared to January 2009.
Destinations
- There were more trips to Fiji (up 1,700 or 61.9%), India (up 750 or 39.2), Singapore (up 700 or 243.8%), the Philippines (up 420 or 65.0%) and Tonga (up 400 or 36.5%).
- In contrast, there were fewer trips to Australia (down 1,960 or 3.5%), the United Kingdom (down 420 or 17.0%), Canada (down 360 or 27.8%), China (down 180 or 3.9%) and Taiwan (down 170 or 19.0%).
Purpose
- There were more New Zealanders on holiday (up 2,160 or 5.5%), on business (up 1,700 or 12.8%) and visiting friends and relatives (up 40 or 0.1%) in January 2010 compared to January 2009.
Duration
- The average length of trips in January 2010 was 20.4 days, 3.3 days shorter than in January 2009.
Annual Departures
- There were 1.920 million trips undertaken in the year ended January 2010, down by 41,000 or 2.1% on the previous year.
